Better Call Saul: When Saul broke bad

The much anticipated Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul aired it’s first episode last Sunday

The events in the show are set about 6 years before the events of Breaking Bad and follow struggling criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) as he tries to make something out of his career.

Although the main story is predates Breaking Bad’s events the opening scene is from after the original show. Hopefully this means the rest of the season will feature more future-scenes so viewers can see what happens to their favourite lawyer.

Not long into the episode you feel like you’re right back in the Breaking Bad universe. The quirky characters, dark humour and witty dialogue all add to this.

The first episode sees two popular characters from Breaking Bad make a return.

Jonathan Banks returns as Mike Ehrmantraut who we briefly see working as a parking attendant.

The psychotic meth dealer/user Tuco (Raymond Cruz) also appears in the episode.

On a whole the episode captures the Breaking Bad world well. It also looks like it will be a interesting character study. The return of Mike and Tuco will go down well with fans as they were favourites from the original show. Better Call Saul is unlikely to mirror Breaking Bad’s success and popularity but with Vince Gilligan writing viewers should know they’re in for a treat.

Better Call Saul will be released weekly on Netflix and AMC
